This article explains why real self-defense for women begins before anything physical happens. Many women notice danger early, but have been conditioned to dismiss discomfort in order to avoid seeming rude, dramatic, or confrontational.
Alan Condon explains that awareness is not paranoia. It is trained attention. The ability to trust what your body is already detecting can help women recognize developing threats sooner and make safer decisions before a situation becomes physical.
Best for women in Albany and the Capital Region who want practical self-defense training, more confidence, and a stronger ability to recognize and respond to danger early.

She noticed him when she walked in.
Something was off. She didn’t know what exactly. He was just standing there – not doing anything, not saying anything. But something in her body registered it before her mind caught up.
So she did what she’d been doing her whole life. She told herself she was being dramatic. She smiled past it. She didn’t want to make it weird.
She told me this story six months after she started training. She came in because of what happened next in that parking lot. She stayed because of what she learned about what happened before it.
She didn’t miss the signal. She’d been taught to dismiss it.
Women are taught from childhood to manage other people’s comfort. To smile when they’re uneasy. To give the benefit of the doubt. To not cause a scene. To not be the person who overreacted, who made it weird, who accused someone of something that turned out to be nothing.
This conditioning is so deep that most women don’t experience it as conditioning. They experience it as politeness. As social grace. As being reasonable.
What it actually is: a systematic override of the threat-detection system that every human body comes equipped with.
Your instincts are not dramatic. They are data. The unease you feel when something is off, before you can name what it is, is your nervous system processing information your conscious mind hasn’t caught up to yet. It is, in the most literal sense, the most sophisticated early-warning system available to you.
And most women have been trained to turn it off.
Real self-defense doesn’t start with a technique. It starts with permission to trust what your body already knows.
Awareness is not paranoia. It is not walking through the world in fear, cataloguing threats, treating every person as a potential attacker.
Awareness is a trained state of calibrated attention. Reading a room the way a skilled navigator reads weather – not alarmed by every cloud, but not surprised by the storm either.
It is the habit of noticing what is actually happening around you, without the social filter that says you shouldn’t.
The man who was too close. The conversation that felt designed to distract you. The situation where the exits were fewer than you’d like. The moment that was already in motion before you understood what it was.
Most physical threats are preventable. Not because the person with awareness was lucky, but because they recognized what was developing early enough to change the outcome without a single technique ever being required.
The most powerful self-defense tool a woman has is the one she was taught to ignore. We start there.
A lot of self-defense programs for women are built around reassurance. You leave feeling better. You attended something. You did something.
Feeling better is not the same as being safer.
At Empire Defense and Fitness, self-defense training for women is built around the KAJU-KAI system – fifty years of refinement designed for real people in real situations. It teaches awareness as a trained discipline, not a suggestion. It teaches de-escalation as the first and most powerful physical tool. It teaches practical techniques that work under stress, for a real body, against a real threat, not choreography designed to look good in a seminar.
My wife Cheryl trains here. The daughters of students train here. I built this program the way I build everything at Empire Defense and Fitness: the way it needs to be done, not the way that’s easiest to sell.
Real confidence comes from real preparation. Not from feeling better. From being better.
